# Charged after cancelling a subscription? What to do

If you were charged after you cancelled a subscription, the most common reason
is that you cancelled in a different place from where you pay. The second most
common is that a standing payment instruction is still active with your bank or
UPI app. This guide shows you how to check both, how to stop the next charge,
and how to ask for a refund.

In public reviews of link page, card and review services, being charged when
people thought they had stopped paying was one of the complaints we read most
often. Most of those cases come down to the same few steps.

## Step 1: find out where you actually subscribed

Many services sell the same plan in more than one place. You might have paid
inside the iPhone app, inside the Android app, or on the company's website.
These are separate subscriptions, often at different prices, and each one is
cancelled in its own place.

Cancelling on the website does not cancel a plan you bought through Apple.
Deleting the app does not cancel anything either.

To find out, search your email for the receipt from the first payment.

- **A receipt from Apple** means the App Store bills you. As of October 2026,
Apple's help page says to open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions,
choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. If you find no Apple
receipt, Apple says to contact the company that bills you
  ([Apple: cancel a subscription](https://support.apple.com/en-in/118428)).
- **A receipt from Google Play** means Google bills you. Open your
subscriptions in the Play Store, choose the subscription and tap Cancel
subscription. As of October 2026, Google's page says plainly that
uninstalling the app will not cancel it
  ([Google Play: cancel a subscription](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481?hl=en-IN)).
- **A receipt from the company itself**, or from a payment company such as
Razorpay, Stripe or Paddle, means you cancel in your account on their
website, usually under Billing, Plan or Settings.

If you have used more than one email address or Apple account, check each.

## Step 2: cancel before the renewal date

Cancel at least a day or two before the date your plan renews, not on the day.
Most services cancel "at the end of the period", which means you keep what you
paid for until the renewal date and are not charged again.

For free trials, Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends,
as of October 2026. If a trial asked for your card or a UPI mandate at the
start, write the end date in your phone's calendar the day you sign up.

After you cancel, look at the screen again. A real cancellation usually changes
what the page says, for example "Will not renew" or an end date instead of a
renewal date. On Apple, if there is no Cancel button any more, the subscription
is already cancelled.

## Step 3: check your UPI AutoPay and card mandates

In India, a yearly or monthly plan is usually charged through a **mandate**.
This is a standing permission you gave once, on your card or in your UPI app,
that lets the company take the agreed amount again on the agreed dates. With
UPI it is called UPI AutoPay.

Cancelling with the company should stop the mandate. But you can also see and
stop it yourself, which is a useful second check.

- **UPI AutoPay.** Open the UPI app you paid with and look for the mandates or
AutoPay section. NPCI's own guidelines for UPI AutoPay say a new mandate
appears under active mandates, and that you can pause or revoke a mandate at
any time, as of October 2026
  ([NPCI UPI AutoPay guidelines](https://www.npci.org.in/uploads/UPI_Auto_Pay_Brand_Guidelines_bcabed7282.pdf)).
- **Card mandates.** These sit with the bank that issued your card. Look in
your bank's app or net banking for standing instructions or e-mandates, or
  call the bank.

The Reserve Bank of India's e-mandate rules, which cover cards, prepaid
wallets and UPI, say your bank must tell you at least 24 hours before each
charge, must let you opt out of that charge or the whole mandate, and must let
you withdraw a mandate at any time. That is from the RBI's Digital Payments
E-mandate Framework, 2026, as of October 2026
([RBI Master Direction](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=13374)).

If you get that message for a renewal you do not want, act on it then.

## Step 4: keep the proof

Screenshot the cancellation screen, keep the confirmation email and note the
date. Do the same if you revoked a mandate in your UPI app. If you are charged
again, this proof is what gets your money back.

## Step 5: ask for a refund

Write to whoever took the money as soon as you see the charge. Give the email
you signed up with, the date and amount, and your proof of cancelling.

- **Charged by Apple?** As of October 2026, Apple's page says to sign in at
reportaproblem.apple.com, choose Request a refund and pick the subscription
  ([Apple: request a refund](https://support.apple.com/en-in/118223)).
- **Charged by Google Play?** Google's page says the developer handles most app
purchase refunds, and that contacting the developer is often the fastest way,
  as of October 2026
  ([Google Play refunds](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2479637?hl=en-IN)).
- **Charged by the company directly?** Read its refund page first, so you know
the time limit, then write to the address it gives.

If the company does not answer, or refuses after you cancelled in time, contact
your bank or card issuer with your proof.

## How Cardless Club handles this

You do not need us to follow anything above. But since we sell yearly plans,
here is exactly how ours work.

**One place to pay and one place to stop.** We have no phone app, so there is
no App Store or Google Play version of our plans to cancel separately. Plans
are bought on our website.

**You are told before you pay.** When a plan is set to renew, the buy button
says it renews every year until you stop it, before the payment screen opens.
A plan that does not renew says it is paid once and does not renew.

**You can stop it yourself.** The Your plan page in your dashboard shows what
is set to renew and on which date, with a Stop renewing button. You do not have
to email anyone. After you stop it, the page says it will not renew and shows
the date your plan runs until.

**You keep what you paid for.** Stopping always takes effect at the end of the
period you paid for. If you stop on the second day of a year, you keep the
year. If you remove the mandate from your bank or UPI app instead, the result
is the same: nothing is taken away early, and the plan runs until the end of
the period you last paid for.

**Nothing is deleted when a plan ends.** Your page stays up, your cards keep
working and your name stays yours. The paid settings stay saved and switch back
on if you subscribe again.

**Refunds.** You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of paying,
including within 14 days of a renewal charge. Our
[refund policy](/refunds) has the details and the address to write to.

We do not send a renewal reminder email yet. The renewal date is always on
your plan page, and in India your bank or UPI app tells you before the charge,
as described above.

## Questions

### I cancelled on the website, but Apple still charged me. Why?

You probably have two subscriptions, or the only one you have is with Apple.
A plan bought inside the iPhone app is billed by Apple, and only cancelling it
in your Apple subscriptions stops it.

### How do I stop UPI AutoPay for a subscription?

Open the UPI app you paid with, find the mandates or AutoPay section, choose
the mandate and revoke it. Also cancel with the company, so its records match.

### Will I lose my page if I stop my Cardless Club plan renewing?

No. You keep the paid plan until the end of the period you paid for. After
that your page carries on with the [free plan](/pricing), and nothing you made
is deleted.

### Can I get a refund for the rest of the year?

With us, a full refund within 14 days of paying. After that we do not refund
part of a year, but the plan keeps working until the year is up and does not
renew if you have stopped it. If you are comparing card services before you
buy, our guide to
[digital business cards in India](/blog/digital-business-card-india) explains what to
check when a subscription ends.
